Finishing the bridge

This footbridge was put in to open up access on the network of paths in the Falkland Estate.

Finished at last

It just needed a ramp putting on. This was done as a boardwalk design. Thanks to a lot of other volunteers as well as those shown here for building the bridge.

Our first customer?

Hope there's no troll living under there...

Working in the white stuff......

This was our Central Lowlands manager Simon Lockwood out working the Alstor in a blizzard at the weekend, restoring a PAWS site. Very well done Simon. A native woodland manager's work never stops.

Spring Outlook

This magnificent old horse chestnut is a lovely feature at a local historic garden.

The sweeping branches touch the ground and are sheltering a carpet of emerging spring bulbs; winter aconites and snowdrops, amongst the leaf litter.

phoenix hazel in Morvern

This old hazel tree is growing on a wet & steep slope, and at some stage has fallen over. However this was not enough to kill it, and new shoots have grown up to reinvigorate the tree. I came across it while preparing for an event on managing woodlands for plants that we are helping to organise on the 8th of March. If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with gordon.graystephens@scottishnativewoods.org.uk

Woodland Tapestries 2

On a short walk today, I noticed the wonderful range of colours to be found on our native birch trees. Even on a dull day they stand out.

The ruby colours and peeling texture of the bark on younger sapling birch.

The smooth silver tones on the intermediate pole birch

The lichen covered older stems form shades of grey.

TIGER TIGER BURNING BRIGHT...

My favourite bark colour of the day!

Back to the storms again......

Murky......

Ash buds

Ash buds are reputedly the blackest thing in nature. May or may not be true.....
